Year 6

Our first topic is ‘Explorers and Adventurers’, where we will be learning about different journeys of discovery and the courageous people who undertook them. The homework sheet will give you some ideas for topic-based activities that you can enjoy completing with your child at home to support and extend their learning.

In English we will be developing our descriptive writing skills, focusing on how we can use figurative language and powerful vocabulary to bring settings to life. The children will write their own setting descriptions before moving on to creating an engaging information leaflet about the Amazon rainforest. Some book recommendations to support your child with their learning are The Explorer/Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell and The Nowhere Emporium by Ross.

In Maths we will be developing our knowledge of place value by learning to read and write numbers up to eight digits. We will also be refining the speed and accuracy at which we can use written methods for addition, subtraction and multiplication. These methods will then be used to support our problem-solving. In addition, we will practise finding common factors, common multiples and prime numbers. Later in the term, we will also explore fractions, including comparing and ordering them.

In Reading we will be focusing on developing our retrieval skills, we will be reading a range of texts including Shackleton’s
Journey by William Grill.

Our Science topic is ‘Living Things and their Habitats’. We will focus on classification, learning how scientists group and identify plants, animals and microorganisms according to their characteristics. We will also explore how classification keys can help us identify unfamiliar living things.

In RE, we will explore the different faiths and beliefs represented in our local community and consider how these have changed over time. We will learn about local places of worship and explore how religious and secular communities support others.
